Packaging That Sells Itself

Your packet gets three seconds on the shelf. Make them count.

If your packaging needs a promoter standing beside it, it is not packaging. It is a box.

What this is

On a shelf, nobody reads your story. They glance, they judge, they reach for something else. This masterclass shows product SMEs how packaging actually sells: the 3-second test, the order the eye reads information, the colour and shape codes of your category, and how to brief a designer so you pay for a pack that works, not one that just looks nice.

What you will be able to do

Modules

  1. Pretty packaging that does not sell is decoration. Why so many SME packs win compliments from friends and lose on the shelf. You learn the 3-second shelf test, run it on your own product, and see exactly what a stranger understands before their hand moves to the next brand.
  2. Your logo is not the first thing they should read. The hierarchy of information on a pack: what it is, why it is different, who it is for, then who made it. We map what your current pack says first, second and third, and how far that sits from what buyers actually need to know.
  3. Every category has a uniform. Learn it before you break it.. Colour and shape codes that tell shoppers what a product is before they read a word, from the green of herbal to the gold of premium kuih raya tins. You learn to read the codes in your category so you never break one by accident.
  4. Stand out too much and nobody knows what you sell. The tension between standing out and belonging. We look at packs that disappear on the shelf and packs so different that shoppers walk past confused, and you learn where your product should sit on that line for the buyer you want.
  5. The label rules you cannot design around. An overview of the mandatory information most packs carry and why it must be planned into the layout from day one, not squeezed in at the end. Requirements differ by product type, so you leave knowing which questions to take to the relevant authority before printing.
  6. Your pack, through a stranger's eyes, live. We put your own packaging through the 3-second test and the hierarchy audit together. You walk out with a marked-up pack showing what to cut, what to move up, what to enlarge and which category codes you are breaking without meaning to.
  7. One promise on the front. Everything else goes round the back.. We write the front-of-pack message for your product: the one claim, the descriptor and the proof point that earns a second look. The rest is ordered for the back and sides, so nothing important competes for the same three seconds.
  8. The unboxing is your second shelf. For products sold on Shopee, TikTok Shop or your own site, the box arrives where no shelf exists. We design the opening sequence, the inserts and the small moments that make customers film it, without spending on layers nobody notices.
  9. A bad brief buys you three pretty options and no answer. We write your packaging design brief together: the buyer, the shelf, the competitors, the hierarchy, the codes to keep and the codes to break. Built so any designer, agency or freelancer can work from it without guessing what you meant.
  10. Cost it before you fall in love with it. We work through what drives packaging cost: materials, print, finishes, minimum order quantities and how unit cost moves as volume grows. You leave with a ready-to-run packaging plan, the questions to ask every printer and a rollout order your margins can survive.
